The Horizon Menorah
The Horizon Menorah is a study in balance, clarity, and quiet presence. Designed and handcrafted by artist Edward Inks, The Horizon Menorah reflects a lifetime of working with form, proportion, and the natural warmth of wood. The menorah begins with a solid walnut base shaped with clean architectural lines and softened edges that invite the hand. Through the center runs a pale maple inlay, a deliberate horizon line that creates a sense of grounding and visual calm. This subtle contrast between dark and light woods gives The Horizon Menorah its name and establishes a rhythm that carries through the entire design.
Nine nickel‑plated candle cups are aligned in a straight, balanced row, with the shamash subtly elevated at center. This gentle shift in height adds dimension without disrupting the overall stillness of the form. The materials—walnut, maple, and nickel—work together in a restrained palette that feels modern yet warm, sculptural yet functional. Nothing is overstated; the design relies on proportion, contrast, and the natural character of the wood to create presence.
The Horizon Menorah is designed for those who appreciate objects that hold space quietly. It is not ornate, but it is thoughtfully made. The proportions are tuned to feel steady and grounded, with enough visual weight to anchor a table or mantle without overwhelming it. The maple inlay acts as a visual guide, drawing the eye across the length of the menorah and emphasizing the linearity that defines its character. When lit, the candles create a soft glow that reflects off the nickel‑plated cups and warms the walnut surface, enhancing the grain and subtle shifts in tone.
Each menorah is crafted in small batches, allowing for close attention to detail and consistency. The walnut is finished with a urethane spray for durability, followed by an oil application that brings out the depth of the wood. For ongoing care, many customers prefer Howard Feed‑N‑Wax to maintain the richness of the walnut over time. The nickel‑plated cups are selected for their clean lines and reliable fit with standard Hanukkah candles, ensuring both beauty and practicality.
The Horizon Menorah is not only a ritual object but also a sculptural piece that stands beautifully on its own throughout the year. Its minimal profile and natural materials make it easy to integrate into a range of interiors—from contemporary to traditional, from curated shelves to open tabletops. Those who enjoy exploring modern interpretations of ritual objects can find more designs in our menorah collection. It is designed to be an heirloom, something that can be passed down and appreciated for its craftsmanship, its simplicity, and its quiet sense of presence.
This menorah reflects Edward’s belief that ritual objects should feel intentional and grounded, offering a moment of stillness in the midst of celebration. The Horizon Menorah honors tradition while embracing modern design, inviting both reflection and connection.
Artist notes
Edward Inks is a sculptor, educator, and designer with more than thirty years of experience working with form, proportion, and space. His background includes an MFA in sculpture from Carnegie Mellon University and decades of studio practice exploring how objects live in relation to the body and the environments they occupy.
Before turning his attention to small-batch ritual objects and functional sculpture, Edward taught sculpture at Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and Santa Barbara City College. His large-scale metal works are installed at two Santa Barbara colleges, in private homes, and in locations across the United States and abroad.
Edward’s time as a Peace Corps volunteer in Botswana also shaped his approach to making, reinforcing a respect for resourcefulness, care, and the role objects play in daily life. Today, his work in wood and metal focuses on clarity, balance, and quiet presence. Each menorah is designed to feel both sculptural and approachable—an object that supports ritual while sitting comfortably in the home year-round.
Every Horizon Menorah is made in small batches, allowing Edward to stay close to the process and the details. The result is a piece that reflects his long-standing commitment to thoughtful design, considered proportion, and the subtle kind of beauty that reveals itself over time.
